Lake Houston is a water reservoir on the San Jacinto River, 15 miles northeast of Houston, Texas. It is the city's primary municipal water supply. Lake Houston is situated between Kingwood, Atascocita, and Humble on the west bank, Sheldon on the south, and Crosby and Huffman on the east.
A dam exists on the southern bank along Dwight D. Eisenhower Park. Lake Houston was created in 1953. The City of Houston built the dam to create a lake reservoir to replace Sheldon Lake, which was then the city's primary water source.
The city sold Sheldon Lake to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as a waterfowl sanctuary and public fishing site. In 1956, the city annexed the Lake Houston area and a 22.5-mile canal.
